If we’ve known one another for a while, you may know that before I was in full time entrepreneur mode, I had a corporate job with DaimlerChrysler Financial services in Leadership Development.
I enjoyed that job. I was part of a dynamic team, traveled around the world and worked with high level executives.
When I learned I was going to be laid off from that position as the companies unmerged, I had a few options.
I could relocate and take another job within the company (the choices were Detroit or Berlin).
I could look for a similar position in another company.
I could listen to my heart and turn my side hustle that I’d had for twelve years (teaching Jazzercise), into a full-blown business, something I’d fantasized about doing.
The latter was the risky choice.
As I was mulling over this decision, ok, more like agonizing over it, I thought of my dad. My dad was an energetic, make things happen kind of guy. Although he died suddenly just days after his 52nd birthday, his legacy is always with me.
He is my daily reminder of the “life is short” cliche which shapes my choices and actions.
His example encourages me to ask myself what kind of person do I want to be? Am I doing what lights me up? What kind of contribution do I want to make in this world? Am I tuning into what I really want? Am I living without regrets?
Losing such a nice big paycheck and generous benefits was scary as I was single at the time and the only source of financial support for myself (not to mention a Fairfield County size mortgage which needed to be paid).
I was overwhelmed, stuck, confused, stressed, and suffering from paralysis from analysis. Anyone been there?
Ultimately, I choose to follow my dream and forge a new career path, and over the past twenty years it has taken several twists and turns, and buckets of tears, but I am able to continue that path and navigate the speed bumps by utilizing practices, tools and resources that helped me move forward. And now I’m excited to share these practices with you.
