I saw this quote by Billy Porter over the weekend in Pittsburgh at a very cool exhibit at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. (click to see some of the beautiful displays).
While not all the weekend plans went as hoped, I was able to spend time with my brother and 12 year old nephew, Chase, who were in town for a baseball tournament.
As I scrolled through the photos from the weekend, I reread this quote and realized that I am an icon for Chase.
He knows I am there for him, support him and cheer him on whether he hits a home run or strikes out (he did both).
I not only show this in my words and with weekly texts, but in my actions like showing up for this tournament. Plus I heard him telling his friends how his super cool aunt went zip lining in the jungle recently. Ok, I added the super cool part, but it was implied.
This kind of icon is MUCH more rewarding than one with lots of followers or likes.
Care, respect and understanding is where we.begin.
You too, are an icon!
